I love the idea of dead gods. Not in the sense of “hey i killed something supernaturally strong” but in the sense of “i killed it and it’s still a god.” It is still worshipped. prayers are still answered. miracles are performed in its name, even as it lies pierced by a thousand swords and burning with chemical fire. even as it drifts through vacuum, decapitated and bleeding molten rock. in cosmic spite of being shot through each eye and hurled into a plasma reactor, it still radiates the power of the divine in a way that primitive death cannot smother. the nature of godchild is not so simple as to be tied to the mortality, or immortality, of any living being.

PSA - Conflation and Misinformation

This is your regularly scheduled reminder that the fact that something historical:

  • refers to
  • is named for
  • is located near
  • is tangentially related to
  • resembles

a pagan or pre-Christian:

  • society
  • culture
  • festival
  • personage
  • tradition

does not automatically make it evidence of:

  • cultural theft (by the Church)
  • direct correlation
  • direct equivalence
  • antiquity of modern pagan beliefs
  • actual witches (by modern standard)
  • secret surviving pagan cults

and when encountering these claims, one should always:

  • read / think / listen critically
  • look for sources from the presenter making the claim
  • fact-check using information from mundane academic sources
  • revise previous views in light of new information where applicable
  • do all of this before passing on the information to others

Apply as needed. There are exceptions to these rules, so always do your homework.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power
Dreamworks Animation
Art Direction: Lamb Chamberlin
and Elizabeth Kresin

In She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, fan favorite Glimmer always wakes up to a perfect setting for a Zoom chat with her Best Friend Squad. Elizabeth Kresin, the show’s Art Director since 2018, says that Glimmer’s home–the Kingdom of Bright Moon on the planet Etheria–is a fancy place, inspiring the bedroom’s look. “We didn’t want anything to feel flat or matte, and everything is high gloss.”

Kresin credits Background Painter and Color Stylist Amanda Winterstein for the opalescent look, while Elle Michalka, a visual development artist who worked on the series early on, came up with the idea of the magical floating bed, because “what kid wouldn’t want bunk beds? So we took that and made it as extreme as possible.” As for the space itself, “a round tower bedroom is just the ultimate princess fantasy.”

Bright Moon is the antithesis to the evil world of the show’s protagonists [sic], The Horde, where the designs are jagged and haphazard. To emphasize this, Kresin says, Glimmer’s bedroom is spherical, her bed is a golden ball, and there’s lots of yonic imagery. “We wanted to keep everything as soft arches [and] really round towers … every detail is meticulously considered for its beauty.”

Glimmer’s bedroom is also the only place in her Crystal Castle [sic] where she’s guaranteed some alone time. Since she’s the only one who can teleport, Kresin says putting the bed high up ensures she can get “as far away from everything else as possible.”

Shelter-at-home verdict: A transcendent escape whose who [sic] soothing mood (and Zoomtastic ambience) makes isolation less lonely.
